You can buy the best optic in the world, but if it’s not mounted and zeroed properly, it won’t perform. At Downrange Precision Arms, we see it all the time: shooters frustrated with “bad optics” when the real issue is improper setup.
Here’s how to get the most from your glass — whether it’s a red dot, LPVO, or precision rifle scope.
Step 1: Choose the Right Mount
Your optic is only as good as the mount holding it.
- Height: AR platforms typically need a 1.5″–1.93″ mount height for proper eye alignment.
- One-piece mounts vs. rings: One-piece mounts offer rigidity and proper alignment, while rings give flexibility for precision setups.
- Quick-detach vs. fixed: QD mounts are great for versatility, but fixed mounts often provide a more repeatable zero.
Pro Tip: Always invest in a quality mount — cheap mounts cause more problems than cheap glass.
Step 2: Proper Installation
Slapping on an optic isn’t enough. Torque and alignment matter.
- Level the rifle first (using a bubble level or leveling kit).
- Align the reticle to ensure it’s not canted.
- Torque screws to spec (typically 15–25 in-lbs for rings, 40–65 in-lbs for base mounts).
- Use blue thread locker on mounting screws to prevent shift.
Step 3: Establish a Good Zero
Zeroing ensures your point of aim = point of impact.
- 25/50 Yard Zero (Red Dots): Perfect for defensive ARs — gives you a usable trajectory from close quarters to 200 yards.
- 100 Yard Zero (General Use): The standard for most rifles and optics, balancing short and mid-range shooting.
- 200 Yard Zero (Precision/Competition): Useful for flatter trajectories with match ammo.
Pro Tip: Fire 3–5 shot groups before making adjustments — single shots can be misleading.
Step 4: Confirm & Reconfirm
Once you’ve zeroed, confirm at different distances and with your actual ammo load. Remember:
- Barrel length, bullet weight, and velocity all affect trajectory.
- Suppressors or muzzle devices may slightly shift your zero.
Why It Matters
A properly mounted and zeroed optic improves:
- Accuracy (you hit where you aim)
- Consistency (repeatable groups)
- Confidence (you trust your gear)
At DPA, we don’t just mount your optic — we set it up to perform.
