Protect, Cool, and Mount
Why free-float handguards improve accuracy, how to choose M-LOK vs. KeyMod vs. Picatinny, and heat considerations.
Handguards do more than make the rifle look good. They protect your hands, interface accessories, and — with free-float designs — can improve accuracy.
Free-float vs. drop-in
Drop-in handguards are easy and cheap but can affect barrel harmonics and accuracy if they contact the barrel. Free-float handguards attach at the barrel nut/upper and don’t touch the barrel — giving more consistent harmonics and potential accuracy gains.
Mounting systems
M-LOK and KeyMod are lightweight, modular attachment systems for accessories. M-LOK has become the industry favorite due to durability and accessory availability. Picatinny rails offer rugged mounting but at the cost of extra weight.
Material & length
Aluminum handguards are common for strength and heat resistance. Consider a length that matches your intended shoot style: short for CQB, mid for general purpose, full-length for long-reach accessories and bipod placement.
Heat & ventilation
Ventilation slots help reduce heat transfer. If you expect sustained fire, look for thicker rails with heat-dissipating features and consider free-float for better heat isolation.
Practical setup
Plan accessory placement — light, vertical grip, laser, sling mounting — before finalizing your handguard purchase. A clean, functional layout reduces weight and improves ergonomics.
