Everyday Gear We Customize
At Downrange Precision Arms, laser engraving is one of those small details that makes gear personal, professional, and built-to-last. Sure — we engrave receivers and serials — but our laser isn’t picky. If it’s metal, wood, glass, leather, or many polymers, we can make it yours. Below is a practical guide to the kinds of everyday items we engrave, how we do it, and ideas to make your next gift, promotional piece, or keepsake stand out.
What we engrave (short list — and yes, we’ll do bulk runs)
- Tumbler / Drinkware — stainless steel tumblers, flasks, travel mugs
- Knives & multi-tools — blades, handles, sheaths
- Tooling & parts — wrenches, gauges, magazine bases, AR parts (non-serialized surfaces)
- Range gear — mag plates, ammo cans, brass catchers, ear pro cases
- Optics & accessories — scope caps, optic plates (we follow manufacturer guidelines)
- Holsters, leather goods & wallets — names, logos, dates
- Wood & laminate — stock inlays, rifle cases, plaques
- Glass & acrylic — awards, display panels, signs
- Electronics housings — keyboards, phone backs (polymers that can accept laser marking)
- Gifts & keepsakes — wedding cake servers, rings boxes, commemorative plaques
Materials & what works best
- Stainless steel / Aluminum: Excellent contrast and durability; laser annealing or etching produces crisp marks.
- Anodized aluminum: Great for high-contrast, long-lasting logos.
- Coated or painted surfaces (Cerakote, powder, paint): We can engrave through coatings to reveal base metal for a two-tone effect — works especially well on Cerakoteed parts.
- Wood: Beautiful, warm engraving; grain affects final contrast (we recommend test pieces for showpieces).
- Leather: Deep, classic marks — perfect for wallets, holsters, or presentation boxes.
- Glass & acrylic: Frosted/etched look — great for awards.
- Polymers: Many polymers engrave well; some will melt or char if settings aren’t correct — we calibrate power/speed for each material.
Our method — why laser engraving is the go-to
We use professional-grade laser systems that deliver:
- Fine detail — logos, serials, micro-text.
- Repeatability — perfect for batches or serialized runs.
- Non-contact process — minimal heat transfer and no mechanical wear on the part.
- Fast setup for small runs — ideal for single gifts or production batches.
We always run a sample or proof on a spare or sacrificial surface when the item and design demand it.
Design & file requirements (what to send us)
To get the cleanest result, provide:
- Vector artwork (SVG, PDF, AI, EPS) for logos — vectors scale without pixelation.
- High-resolution raster images (PNG, JPG) at 300 DPI or higher for photos or complex art — but vectors are preferred.
- Font names (or convert text to outlines) — ensure we have the rights to use any commercial fonts.
- Exact layout or mock-up — tell us where on the part to place the mark; photos with sketches are great.
- Text for serials/names/dates — give the exact spelling and capitalization; we don’t guess.
If you don’t have artwork, we offer quick logo cleanup and layout services (vectorization, font pairing, sizing) for a small design fee.
Practical ideas & use cases
- Corporate & team branding: Logo on tumblers, knives, or toolkits for giveaways or crew kits.
- Gifts & milestones: Engraved wedding cake servers, anniversary plaques, or “First Build” rifle plates.
- Range & training kits: Mark mags, dumps, and range bags by squad or role to avoid mix-ups.
- Safety & inventory: Tagging serials, inspection dates, or maintenance QR codes on tools and fixtures.
- Promotional runs: Small-batch custom engravings for events, gun shows, or sponsorship swag.
Pricing & quoting (how we price jobs)
Pricing depends on:
- Material (stainless vs wood vs leather)
- Surface prep (do we need to strip or Cerakote first?)
- Design complexity & setup (vector cleanup, layout time)
- Quantity (single item vs bulk run)
- Part handling (fixturing, masking, reassembly)
Instead of a one-size number, we provide fast, clear quotes. Send photos, part dimensions, and desired artwork and we’ll give you a firm quote.
Care & durability
- Laser marks in metal are permanent and tolerant of solvents, range use, and cleaning.
- On coated finishes (Cerakote, paint), avoid abrasive scrubbing on the mark area to preserve contrast — mild cleaners are fine.
- Leather engravings age naturally and often look better over time; avoid heavy chemical cleaners.
How to order (simple steps)
- Send photos of the item (close-up of the area you want engraved) and the artwork/file.
- Tell us placement (measurements or a quick sketch/photo annotation).
- We’ll reply with a quote and a digital proof.
- You approve the proof and we engrave your item.
- Pickup or shipping — we handle safe return shipping if needed.
